Giant Floating Prison In NYC






 
Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center is a huge prison barge that can hold up to 800 inmates. It has 16 dormitories and 100 cells.
 
The barge was built for in 1992 for $161 million in order to reduce overcrowding in New York prisons and has served as a part of the city's prison complex at Rikers Island since then.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Rikers Island, the nation's largest jail complex, is home to approximately 13,000 inmates The bakery turns out thousands of loaves of bread per week...all to feed the prison population.
